Amazing place with great views and scenic road leading to it. This is one of the highlights of the area. Stick to the views restaurants around are mediocre and can be skipped

Impressive, majestic, even overpowering - the words used to describe this Renaissance gem are many. It is the major church of the 28 that the city possesses, but is no longer used for religious services, but for concerts and cultural exhibitions.

It is next to the Alcazaba, through the Giants' Arch - El Arco de los Gigantes. Built between 1514 and 1550 on the instigation of the Bishop of Malaga, it was the first church in Andalucia to be built in Renaissance style, and served as inspiration for part of the Cathedral of Granada.

There is no free entrance for services, obviously, since there are none. The €3 fee is reduced to €1.50 for the over-65s, and it's worth waving your passport for the reduction both here and in the Alcazaba. I managed it with my TfL Freedom Bus Pass . . . my wrinkled face may have helped too!

    The main church of Antequera

There is an interesting wall plaque commemorating the visit of the King and Queen, and a wooden float of the "Taranca", a mythical semi-religious figure half-woman, half serpent or dragon, which heads the processions at Corpus Christi, to the delight of the children watching.

If you like looking at churches, you will like Antequera because it has quite a few - there are twenty-eight churches in all but the finest of the religious buildings is the 16th century Real Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, which has been designated a national monument.
